The concept for this project is rooted in the many ancient and contemporary practices of hanging strips of cloth as invocations or symbolic statements. These practices can be found at sacred wells throughout the UK, outside Japanese Shinto temples, along pilgrimage paths in India, and in the similar act of hanging Tibetan Buddhists' prayer flags. A contemporary secular example is the popularity of "awareness ribbons" to represent messages of solidarity.
Student's from the University of Vermont's Environmental Program class, Environmental Art: Lecture Series and Studio Seminar, facilitated the writing and installation of messages for the Global Climate Change Action, StepItUp.org.
